GGI Joins Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County to Celebrate Groundbreaking

11/21/2023  Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of their new administrative offices and second ReStore location at 105 N. Dulany Avenue in Fruitland, Maryland. Gillis Gilkerson President Tyler Barnes, Executive Consultant Dwight Miller and Project Manager Don Murray were all in attendance to mark the occasion of this important project for our community.  Gillis Gilkerson has been involved from the beginning phases, working closely with HFHWC and Becker Morgan architect Craig Williams to identify potential properties for renovation, and to ensure all the project’s needs could be achieved within budget.

The + / – 8,200 square foot renovation will transform the existing structure into modern offices for the non-profit, with spaces planned for a reception area, intake and training, family services, a conference room, executive offices, and employee break rooms. The remaining square footage will be used to create a second Habitat ReStore location to supplement Habitat’s existing ReStore location on Isabella Street in Salisbury.  The overall design of the space includes an open floorplan, bright colors, and modern accents to create an inspiring space for the non-profits staff and the community.

“This particular property offered the opportunity to incorporate the exposed wood roof deck, and original maple floors into the design.” said project manager Don Murray.  “Reusing existing features not only creates value for the customer, but it adds a lot of character to the space.  We were thrilled to find a space for Habitat that had such stunning possibilities for creative repurposing.”

The groundbreaking event held on October 23, 2023 was attended by dignitaries, donors, board members and staff, and took special care to recognize the projects major supporting donors including the Richard A. Henson Foundation, Nancy Rubenson, The Perdue Family & Sarah Spedden and the Rural Maryland Council. The event also launched the public phase of their fundraising campaign. HFHWC has reached $1.3 million of its $1.8 million dollar fundraising goal for the project.  Naming opportunities are still available for investors who wish to leave a legacy or honor someone special through philanthropic giving.  For more information about Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County visit www.wicomicohabitat.org.
