Q&A Questions:
In a nutshell, how would you describe your role as Superintendent?
Construction Superintendents are responsible for the control of their job sites. As Superintendent, I make sure that projects are constructed per the plans and on schedule, and that everyone on the job site is working safely in the proper manner. I am responsible for scheduling subcontractors efficiently and correctly, so that no one is working over top of one another. Most importantly, I am there to make sure owners are pleased with the work being performed. I always tell them if another project comes along that I hope they would request me.
You’ve been in the commercial construction industry for almost forty years, what has changed in the industry or stayed the same?
The biggest change I have seen over the years is, unfortunately, skill level and work ethic isn’t the same as it was years ago. I hope that more young people begin to see skilled trades as valuable career paths, to reinforce our industry’s talent. Materials are also not of the same quality, and contract documents are not as accurate as in the past, which is surprising given the technology we have available today!
What initially drew you to the construction industry?
My father, John “Jack” Griffith Jr. was superintendent also. Construction is all I’ve ever known. I’m proud to have followed in his footsteps.
You’ve been with Gillis Gilkerson for five years now, is there anything different about your experience with Gillis Gilkerson versus other companies?
The game is the same, just different players. But I will say, Gillis Gilkerson has to be one of easiest and most respectable companies I’ve worked with. They always do what’s right no matter what the issue that comes about.
How do you approach managing and coordinating projects? Any strategies you find most effective?
Communication is absolutely the most important aspect of my role. Not only clear communication, but advance communication. You must reach out to others before need of their services. Can’t call today needing service tomorrow.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Are there any projects you’ve worked on recently that you’d like to highlight?
I enjoy a challenge and working with talented people to see things through to the end. Talbot County Health Department working with Mike Truitt as Project Manager was a rewarding experience. We produced a great finished product with an excellent project team.
What are some challenges you face in your role?
Schedules are the most challenging this in our industry. Sometimes they are behind before a job even starts, with the pressure falling on the field staff to make up for lost time. Some delays can be anticipated or recovered from, but no one can turn back time.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a construction superintendent?
I can’t stress the value of communication!! If it’s not something you enjoy and excel at, this role will be very difficult.
Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests? How do you unwind and recharge?
Fishing, crabbing and shooting sporting clays.
