Lewis R. Riley Library in Parsonsburg Celebrates Grand Opening

PARSONSBURG, MARYLAND – MAY 20, 2026 – Gillis Gilkerson team members were proud to join Wicomico County Public Library staff members, local elected officials, community leaders, library supporters and local residents for the Grand Opening of the Lewis R. Riley Library in Parsonsburg, MD.   Gillis Gilkerson constructed the brand new 2,500 square foot facility that will now serve the eastern Wicomico area – a long-awaited upgrade to the branch that formerly operated out of a trailer in Pittsville.  The new library branch creates a comfortable space for residents to access books, meeting space and a variety of programming – even enjoy the outdoors with Adirondack chairs under its front porch and a cozy fire pit out back.

The library is named after Lewis R. Riley, a Parsonsburg native who served in public office at both the local and state level before becoming Maryland Secretary of Agriculture from 2003 – 2007.  Members of Riley’s family attended the grand opening and even helped cut the ribbon during the ribbon cutting.  Riley’s legacy is honored through the building’s thoughtful design that emphasizes connection to farmland, nature and local history.

The branch was constructed by renovating an existing structure, on property that was formerly operated as a feed mill. The structure was demolished leaving only its exterior walls remaining, before being reinforced with sub-footings and steel to support its new 21-degree angled roof.  Architect David Quillin elected to use an exposed fastener roof, one of many thoughtful design choices that connect the property to times past and the natural world. Additional design features, from large storefront windows, circular gable windows and hexagonal cork acoustical tiles, emphasize natural light and a connection to the outdoors.

The high-quality design of the building goes beyond aesthetics, with a sophisticated HVAC and lighting control system, coupled with friendly gathering spaces will ensure the Lewis R. Riley Library will be a high-quality, well-used asset in our community for years to come. Gillis Gilkerson Project Manager Don Murray led the construction project, also acting as Superintendent.  Don Murray and Gillis Gilkerson President Tyler Barnes were present for the Grand Opening celebration.  Gillis Gilkerson will be submitting the Lewis R. Riley Library project for consideration with Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction Awards.
