Frontier Town and Fort Whaley have made Worcester County a destination for the ultimate camping experience, offering everything from water slides and zip lines to fishing and kayaking on the Sinepuxent Bay. Sun Communities, the force behind more than 400 manufactured housing and RV communities across the country, purchased the two RV resorts and campgrounds back in 2015. Since then, Gillis Gilkerson (GGI) has completed two construction projects for Sun Communities and is currently wrapping up on a third.

“We have come to the conclusion that Gillis Gilkerson is our go-to general contractor in this area,” said Mike Johnson, Project Manager for Atwell Group. “I have good relationships with the superintendents and project managers, and they turn the projects over on schedule and within budget. If we ever face challenges, I know I can brainstorm with them to find the best solutions.”

GGI first partnered with Sun Communities in 2017 to build a new ticket booth and pumphouse for Frontier Town’s Splash Park. Immediately following the first project’s conclusion, the developer hired GGI to spearhead their campground expansion project which included the addition of 100+ RV campsites, a new bathhouse, community hall and well/fire pump building.

When it came time to similarly expand at Fort Whaley, Sun Communities contracted GGI to add another 100+ RV campsites, build a new bathhouse and make renovations to two existing bathhouses. Superintendent Chris Deinlein and Project Manager Matt Esham are currently in the finishing phases of this project.

“It’s exciting to drive by the resorts and see families enjoying all the amenities the campgrounds have to offer,” said Dwight Miller, President of Gillis Gilkerson. “We value the relationship we have with Sun Communities and the Atwell Group and look forward to future projects to support the resorts’ success and growth.”
